AMC EXAM OVERVIEW
International medical graduates (IMGs) whose medical qualifications are from a medical institution outside of Australia or New Zealand, and who are seeking registration to practice medicine in Australia, can do so via one of the following assessment pathways:
- Standard Pathway
- Competent Authority Pathway
- Specialist Pathway
The Standard Pathway is for IMGs seeking general registration with the Board. The AMC assesses IMGs under the Standard Pathway as following:
- AMC CAT MCQ Examination
- AMC Clinical Examination or
- Workplace based assessment of clinical skills and knowledge
AMC MCQ Exam
- Computer Adaptive Test (CAT)
- 3.5-hour session in examination centres worldwide
- 150 A-type MCQs (one correct response from five options)
The AMC score is based on measurement of the candidate ability level and represented on a scale of 0 to 500. A passing score is represented on the scale at 250.
Each candidate receives a computer-generated transcript of their results and feedback on their performance in the MCQ examination.
Requirements:
IMGs who have a primary qualification in medicine and surgery awarded by a training institution recognised by the AMC are eligible to apply for AMC assessment.
